The Golden Totara is a New Zealand native hybrid, a smaller growing pyramidal form of the green totara (Podocarpus totara) which is commonly known as the 'king of the forest'. It has a branching habit, with smart, greenish foliage that turns an attractive golden yellow colour with the sun. It grows throughout most of New Zealand and is an excellent foliage plant which can be trimmed to make a dense hedge. The Totara grows well in sun or semi-shade, and tolerates exposed sites and frosts but it still needs to be protected while young. The Golden Totara is slow-growing, and generally grows to around 4 metres in height.
